Project

My hands on project will be taking place at the PSPCA in Philadelphia. I will be working alongside other volunteers and hopefully my mentor. I will be volunteering as a “companion” to the animals, which includes interacting with the animals in many different ways, from feeding and cleaning to playing.

Project Outcome
I hope to finish my hours of volunteerism at the SPCA with a new, first-hand perspective on the lives of animals. I will use this knowledge to help add a different touch to my research project, as I will have witnessed what I am researching for myself.

Project Completion strategies
Take notes and journal about my experiences often. Work after school, utilize time in class and in academic seminar.

Project Resources and Materials
I will need the hours of volunteerism at the SPCA to complete my project. Also, I think it would be useful to record some of my time at the center for use in my video. Other materials include my journal and my wikispace to record my progress.

Research

Research Topic
My topic is the prevention of animal cruelty. I chose this topic because I am passionate about it; I have three pets of my own and I am angered by the continued practice of abuse to animals.

Essential Questions
Why is animal abuse still a prevalent issue in the world and what are we doing to prevent it?

Prior Experience
I have researched this topic before for a different project in the past.

Research Benefits
My research will benefit me by giving myself background knowledge of what I will be dealing with as I volunteer in the SPCA.

Potential Sources
I think a potential source will be the people I interact with at the SPCA as well as online databases.
